NCTDSA Scholarship Recipient Amanda Carlson

The $500 NCTDSA Scholarship for 2010 has been awarded to Amanda Carlson. Tom Carlson, who is employed by Pomp's Tire Service, is her proud dad.

Amanda graduated with a high grade point average from Fridley High School in June. In the fall, she is looking forward to the challenges that await her when she attends the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

At this time, Amanda plans on majoring in business management. "I desire to have my own company one day so that I may help hold America together by providing jobs for those around me," she said. "I believe that I have the potential to positively impact the world. First off, I need to receive the education to do so."

Vic Leerhoff Scholarship Recipient James Hueser

James Hueser is this year's recipient of the $1000 Vic Leerhoff Scholarship. He is the son of Mark and Cathie Hueser, who own Sam's Tire Service, along with his uncle, in Glencoe, Minnesota.

James was nine years old when the family purchased the business. Starting from the ground up, he helped remove nine semi-trailers full of old tires and a huge garbage pile from the parking lot. By seventh grade, James was going on service calls with his dad, and after gaining enough skills, was on his own responding to emergencies, especially during harvest.

In June, James graduated from Glencoe Silver Lake High School. Additionally, he also received his welding diploma from Ridgewater College in Hutchinson. In order to accomplish this, Hueser had to take a full time schedule of 17 college credits while taking three hight school classes.

According to James, his goal is to complete the Auto Mechanics Program along with a Business Degree at Ridgewater College in Willmar. "Then, I would like to return to Sam's Tire Service where I hope to expand our business," he said.

In her scholarship application, Cathy stated, "It is my dream to open a non-profit garage that will provide free or low cost care care to low income people trying to get out of homelessness and poverty. Reliable transportation is a huge need for people to get to work."

Currently, Cathy is working for St. Stephens Human Services, while looking for a job in the auto service industry.
